What in the World Were You Thinking About?

Have you ever thought to yourself, “what was I thinking?” We need to learn how to think before we act and think before we speak. We need to know what we are thinking about and why we are thinking about it. To think is to imagine, ponder, reflect, study and dream. It is a mental activity. What you think about often determines the decisions you make. The Bible says “as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.” God knows our thoughts. The Bible tells us what to think about and what not to think about. It tells is that we shouldn’t be concerned with earthly welfare and we shouldn’t regard ourselves as higher than others. It tells us to avoid uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence and anger, among others. The Bible also tells us what to think on. Scripture says in Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” Do you realize what all of these qualities have in common? They are all qualities of Christ. This tells me that all we have to do is think of Him!

Why We Sing

Christianity is a singing religion. We sing about our God and how good He is! Singing is important to God. The Bible mentions singing over 200 times. The longest book in the Bible is a book of poems and songs and is placed right in the middle of the Bible. We were made to sing songs unto His name. We sing because we are commanded to sing. God tells us to sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Psalms are simply singing a scripture right out of the Bible. Singing scripture is not only pleasing to His ears, it allows you to repeat the scripture over and over again and memorize it so that it is buried in your spirit. Hymns are found in hymn books and usually include a chorus and multiple verses. Spiritual songs are ones that God places in our spirits. There are different types of songs we sing. Some are from us to others, some are action songs, others are songs to ourselves, there are songs we sing to the devil, then there are songs God sings to us and love songs we sing to him! If you have a mouth, you should be using it to glorify God by singing praises unto Him.

Have you ever heard the story of the man in Africa who was looking for diamonds? He searched and searched all over the land and then gave up. He sold the land. The man he sold it to found a big rock on the land and took it to find out what it was. Come to find out, it was a diamond. And not just any diamond, it was the biggest diamond known to man. If the man who sold the land had known what he was looking forever and did not give up, he would have been a very wealthy man. Sometimes we feel as though God has left us to do it all on our own, but He hasn’t. He wants us to continue to trust that He will make a way. He will never leave us nor forsake us. We get so easily distracted by people and stuff and money, that we lose our faith in God. We need to focus on God and keep our faith in Him until His will comes to pass. Then we wonder, if God is with us, why do we struggle so much? Well, even children need to grow up sometime! God is trying to bring out greatness in you but to do what He has to put you in a little trouble, just like the eagle with her young. Don’t give up, help is on the way!

The Bible is the engrafted word. That means it actually becomes a part of you and that is exactly what you want. It serves as a mirror, which means you see yourself in it. It is an instruction manual and a GPS. But the most important thing about the Bible is application. We have to apply the Word to our daily lives. In doing that we have to fast and pray. Prayer is simply communicating with God but when it is accompanied by fasting, it becomes more powerful. Fasting and praying aren’t about us, it’s about the kingdom. Another aspect of spiritual health is social health. The church was God’s idea. Fellowship with other like-minded believers is necessary. The Bible says “forsake not the assembling of yourselves together.” Through fellowship, we develop relationships. To foster these relationships, we have to keep in mind that our outward appearances, body language and communication skills affect everything. Think about how other people’s outward appearances affect the way you think about them. Taking care of your body, your outward appearance will affect the way you carry yourself and the way people interact with you. Forming good communication skills is also imperative to relationships. Misunderstandings get started when we don’t know how to convey our messages and how to listen effectively. And listening carries back over to spiritual health because part of prayer is listening to what God is saying back to you.

Midway Recap

It’s time for a check-in! We are about half way through this study on holistic health and so far we have talked about Physical Health, Mental Health, Emotional Health and Financial Health. I want to know if you have been putting into action what you’ve been learning. Let’s recap. We started off talking about physical health. If you have not been exercising, start by getting down on the floor and getting back up. We are used to everything being so convenient and our muscles are not getting used. It doesn’t cost a whole lot of money to start moving. Don’t make it complicated. Keep it simple and just do it! Diet is also included in physical exercise. We have to eat right and in moderation. Stop eating too much too fast. Then we talked about mental health. One of the best things you can do is change your attitude. It can change your whole life if you look at everything and everyone with a positive attitude. It’s also important to have an active mind and remember that what you think about you become. So keep your mind elevated and think on the things of God. Next we talked about emotional health; fear, stress and distress, joy and laughter, envy and jealousy. We learned that stress is actually good for the body, it’s distress that is bad. We also talked about the normalcy of fear and how it can make you live longer. Last week, we started discussing financial health. Your skills make you more valuable because you get paid more depending on your skills and the quality of your skills. If you want to get paid more you have to increase your skill set. You also can’t be afraid to invest in something even though you are taking the chance of losing. Set SMART goals for developing skills, investing, and savings and start working toward them! Before you start Part 6 of The Ultimate Boost from Within series, start putting some of these things into practice!

Last week we started to touch on the subject of financial health and how wealth does not equate to the amount of money you have. Honestly, you don’t have to really be that smart to do that well. God gave you gifts and He wants a return on His investment. Perfect your skills and you will be successful. You should also surround yourself with people who are smarter than you are and learn from them. One of the biggest secrets to financial success is tithing. If possible, you should do the 10/10 rule. You should give 10% of your earnings as a tithe and 10% of your tithes as an offering. On top of tithing to God, you should tithe to yourself, after your bills are paid of course. Don’t get in the habit of spending more than you make. In fact, as quickly as you can, get out of debt. If you can, live below your means. If you are able to tithe to yourself, you should have 3 savings account. The first one should be an emergency account. Why go into debt over things that you know are going to happen? Emergencies happen all of the time. Be prepared for them. The second is a retirement fund because eventually, you will have to retire. Finally, you need a vacation fund. You don’t want to save up for a vacation and come back and worry about your bills getting paid. You should already have some money set aside for that. Start building these accounts by setting goals and sticking to them.

In this video, I am going to touch on two topics. First, envy and jealousy and then one we have all been waiting for, financial health. Envy and Jealousy are not the same things. When you are envious of someone, you want what they have. When you are jealous, you have a fear of losing something or a fear of someone liking someone/thing else than you. There are negative consequences to jealousy an envy. The final commandment listed in Exodus 20:17 states, “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.” The cure for envy and jealousy is to be content with what you have. Now, financial health is just as important as every other constituent of holistic health. Some people say the money is the root of all evil, but that isn’t true. The love of money is the root of all evil. The Bible even says that money is the answer to all things. We need money. It is not the most important thing but it is important. Money helps you get the things that you need to survive and makes getting those things easier. You’re level of skill is going to determine how much money you make. A cook at White Castle’s is not going to make as much money as a brain surgeon. But, the brain surgeon invested a lot of time, hard work and money to get where they are. We all have the same value as people but what skills do you have to value how much money you can make?

This week, we are going to continue talking about having a healthy mind. Did you know that your heart cannot beat without stress? Stress is not bad but distress is. Distress is when stress gets to the point where it is destructive. To combat distress, the scripture says we should rejoice evermore. Now, there is a difference between joy and happiness. Despite all of the things that are happening to you, you can still feel joy. Laughter is good for the body and good for the soul. You should surround yourself with people who are full of laughter. That will contribute to your joy and alleviate your distress. Worry is a sign of distress and the cause of many physical ailments. We literally worry ourselves sick. The key to being worry free is prayer. God said he will keep in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on him. If you are really praying, you can’t worry and if you worry, you aren’t really praying. Just like stress is good for you, so is fear. Not all fear is bad. The Bible talks about the spirit of fear though. That is when you are afraid of everything. That is not healthy! In fact, unhealthy fear can cause irrational behavior. I pray that you take these words to heart and continue to work towards a more holistically healthy lifestyle, starting with the most powerful part, the mind.

Your mind needs exercise and nourishment just like your body does and your mental health depends on what you put into your mind. The bible tells us what to put in our minds in Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things”. The brain is so powerful that we do not even tap into a small percentage of what it can do. One factor that contributes to our mental health are our attitudes. Unfortunately, it’s harder to have a good attitude than a bad attitude because we are born in sin and shaped by inequities. In Psalms 34, the bible says that we should have an attitude of praise even in times of trouble. I’m not going to say that you will never have a negative experience or a negative report but, for every negative report you have, I want you to think of 10 positive reports. This is a journey toward holistic health and I am asking you to go on it with me.
